FreeWalker Friendships: Miles of Magic

Nine years ago, I found a FreeWalkers flyer advertising the Lenape34 (miles) on Columbus Day. I've always enjoyed challenges and long walks my entire life, so I decided to walk the Lenape34. I met Risa on that walk (now the President of Freewalkers) and we talked nearly the entire time. Early into the walk, I told her this was my first FreeWalker event. She asked me how many miles I planned on walking, and I replied, “all 34 miles”. Not only was this the beginning of my friendship with Risa, Paul, Cory, Ilene, Rick, Charles, Ken, Lynn, Bob and so many more fabulous Freewalkers, it empowered me to do other long-distance challenges.

I've done three 50-milers in one day, including the very special Kennedy50 in West Virginia and a 60-mile walk from Easton to Levittown, Pennsylvania, and numerous more FreeWalker events as well.

My partner, Oscar, has also joined Freewalkers and loves the varied walks and challenges. We pass through many places of historical significance which adds to the enjoyment of our walks.

It's not about how fast one walks, it’s enjoying the camaraderie of other Freewalkers, making dear friends, enjoying nature, cityscapes, and feeling invigorated after a lengthy walk.

I became friends with Loredana, also a FreeWalker, who invited me and Patrick to walk the Coastal Link Challenge in Canada this past summer. This wonderful challenge was from St. John to St. Stephen (July 30th to Aug. 5th, 2023). It was a fabulous adventure walking 106 miles, totally self-supported. Ken, another FreeWalker, also joined us for a visit.

Loredana was honored by the Mayor of St. Stephen, Allan MacEachern, and was included in a stunning mural! The Mayor realized how Loredana’s perseverance made the Coastal Link Trail more enticing to fellow Canadians, and he was thrilled that FreeWalkers helped spread the word about the Coastal Link Trail!

The magic of Freewalkers is endless!

I’ve met so many interesting, kind, and adventurous people by being a FreeWalker. I even joined FreeWalkers on two international trips to England and France for exciting adventures abroad!

We are so profoundly grateful to our founder, Paul Kiczek, for starting this amazing group in 2010. So many people have benefitted from walking with FreeWalkers, while increasing their endurance, stamina, and empowering themselves.

Perhaps you will join us and feel the magic too!  Come solo or bring a friend. It’s all good!
